The Arena is kicking off the second half of the year nicely with comedian Kevin Hart, WWE Live: Summerslam Heatwave Tour and the two-day event StocktonCon. Fans will also be able to get their tickets to BrewFest to kick off Stockton Beer Week in September and Spanish singer Marco Antonio Solis in October. Local hockey organization, the Stockton Colts, will be representing Stockton as they head to the state championships this weekend in San Jose. The Colts have two teams in the organization that made it to the championships – The Bantam Colts and the Squirts. According to Record staff writer Scott Linesburgh, it is a rare occurrence for Stockton to have two teams in the state championships. The Colts play in the NorCal Region and play against bigger teams from the Bay Area; this results in the Colts having to work harder than any team around to make it to the end. The Squirts and Bantam begin the state championships today and we can’t wait to see the results! To read the full Record article, click here. Carrie Underwood’s Storyteller Tour: Stories in the Round will be making a stop in Stockton on Tuesday, April 12, 2016. This will be her first tour in three years! The tour is Underwood’s fifth and current headlining tour in support of her fifth studio album, Storyteller, which was released in October 2015. Joining her on the tour are opening acts Easton Corbin and The Swon Brothers.
The Stockton Arena will be host to eight California Collegiate Athletic Association men and women’s basketball teams this upcoming weekend. The semifinals will take place Friday, March 5th, with finals on Saturday, March 6th. The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) was established in December 1938 and has been the most successful Division II intercollegiate athletic conference in the nation. The association currently has 13 members, one of which is not in the CSU system. The members include CSU Pomona, CSU Chico, CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU East Bay, CSU Los Angeles, CSU Monterey Bay, CSU San Bernardino, CSU San Marcos, CSU Stanislaus, UC San Diego, Humboldt, San Francisco State, and Sonoma State. Men’s Basketball Humboldt State will face off against Cal State LA and Pomona will face UC San Diego. Pomona and UC San Diego are currently ranked in the top-10 of the west region—Pomona ranked seventh and UC San Diego ranked third—while Humboldt State and Cal State LA ranked outside of the top-10. The men of Cal State LA are hoping to become the first No. 8 seed to win the CCAA tournament championship. Pomona was the only other No. 8 seed to advance to the tournament in 2008, winning against Dominguez Hills only to lose to UC San Diego in the finals. Women's Basketball CSU San Bernardino will face off against CSU Dominguez Hills while CSU East Bay will go up against UC San Diego.
In the women’s western regional rankings, UC San Diego is ranked third, Cal State East Bay is ranked sixth and Dominguez Hills is ranked seventh while San Bernardino is out of the top-10 ranks. East Bay defeated Humboldt State Tuesday night making it their 12th straight win this season and are hoping to add the CCAA Champions to their list of wins. With the release of their album Sometime Last Night and world tour, R5 is captivating audiences everywhere. I recently got lucky enough to interview bass player and vocalist, Riker Lynch - check out the interview below! How did you guys get started as a band? We grew up performing all time. Imitating Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and in 2008, I think it was, we moved from Littleton, CO to LA and there Rocky started to teach himself how to play guitar. As he got better and more into it, he got a live DVD of Fall Out Boy and we watched. I thought, “These guys are the coolest dudes I’ve ever seen – I wanna do that!” So I started playing bass and Ross started playing guitar as well. Around the same time, we met Ratliff at a performing arts studio in LA and found out he played drums. We invited him over for a little jam and right when we kicked into the first song, something just sparked and – I don’t think we knew it at the time – but we had just found something special. Later on we begged Rydel to join and when she finally agreed, we were complete. Being that you are all siblings, except one, do you ever get tired of working with one another? We all have our moments but for the most part we really do genuinely love hanging out together all the time. After the tour, we’re gonna get another band house together. Do you still dance after being on Dancing with the Stars? Not really ballroom dancing but you can find me cutting a rug every now and then when a good song comes on. (laughs) What is your favorite or most interesting country that you have been to on tour? My favorites are Italy, England, Ireland, Japan, Peru, and Brazil. I really do love traveling everywhere and I find each country interesting in its own way. And while traveling the world is absolutely amazing, I’m always excited to come back to California. Do you speak any other languages? I’m working on Spanish. Towards the end of the South American leg of the tour, I found myself picking up little things every once in a while. I’m nowhere close to really getting it yet but my goal is to know a lot more by the next time we tour over there. What are your favorite foods? I like literally almost everything except mushrooms (laughs). Any breakfast food I absolutely love. And cheeseburgers have always been my favorite. Do you ever get a chance to explore the cities that you are visiting on tour? We do, depending on our schedule, but we always try to at least see a little something. Going out after the shows seems to be the best time usually. Had you ever heard of Stockton, CA before this tour? Gotta be totally honest, I have not but I’m looking forward to playing the show there! R5 will be at the Bob Hope Theatre on January 26th! The Bob Hope Theatre is known in Central California as a historic theatre but many guests do not know its history. Check out the time line below for some interesting facts!
White Christmas was first released October 14, 1954 with stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, and Rosemary Clooney. This Christmas classic is not one to miss! Come join the Friends of the Fox and SMG to spread the holiday cheer and have a good laugh with White Christmas. Mythbusters stars Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage are known worldwide for pushing the limits to find out whether a myth is busted or true but not everyone knows how the pair got started. With Mythbusters coming to the Bob Hope Theatre on December 9th, I wanted to give all you fans a look into how the show got started and how Jamie and Adam got to where they are now. Let’s start with Jamie. Jamie is easily identified on Mythbusters as being the one with the great goatee and stylish black beret; but Jamie has a very different background than you may think. Hailing from an Indiana farm country, Jamie has a wide array of work experience including: survivalist expert, boat captain, diver, linguist, animal wrangler, machinist and cook. Jamie earned a degree in Russian languages and ran a sailing/diving charter in the Caribbean before going into the special effects career. Jamie started producing models and special effects for movies and commercials; he then took over M5 Industries Inc., now home to Mythbusters. Adam seemed to know who he was and what he wanted to do since he was a young child. The son of a filmmaker/painter and psychotherapist, Adam started making his own toys as soon as he was old enough to hold scissors. Adam’s work experience includes: projectionist, animator, graphic designer, carpenter, interior and stage designer, toy designer, welder and scenic painter. Adam has been focused on the special effects industry since 1993, using his skills on commercials and movies (you may have heard of a few: Star Wars Episode One and the Matrix sequels!). It was in 1993 that Jamie and Adam met when Adam was making unique props for stage productions in San Francisco. Jamie ended up hiring Adam to work with him as a model maker and they went on to collaborate on over 100 commercials together. Years later, Jamie was approached about hosting Mythbusters and he reached out to Adam to join him. The rest is history! In addition to Mythbusters, both Jamie and Adam have other projects they work on. Jamie collaborates with the Office of Naval Research, the U.S. Army and several universities. He even holds two honorary doctorates and several patents! Adam teaches, lectures, and consults on a variety of topics to students, business folks and everyday Joes. He also devotes his time to his own art which has been showcased in over 40 shows in San Francisco, New York and Charleston, West Virginia. All Mythbusters fans know that they can tune into a show and see some of the coolest explosions and experiments, check out the video below to see some of the shows best explosions!
